- Many youth also die every year of alcohol related accidents such as homicide, falls, burns and drowning, according to research by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).
- In 1984, when federal law changed the drinking age to 21, more than half of fatal crashes among drivers aged 15 to 20 were alcohol related. By 1994, after the new law had been in effect, that number had dropped to 22 percent.
- A study in Midwestern states found that 46% of ninth graders who reported drinking alcohol in the previous month said they obtained the alcohol from a person aged 21 or older.
- The U.S. Department of Justice Report on Alcohol and Crime found that alcohol abuse is present in 40 percent of violent crimes committed in the U.S.
